BAW, U HLA, I.S.O., K.S.M., Sessions Judge, retired.

U HLA BAW was born on the 10th March, 1868 at Prome. Educ at the Prome Government School, and Rangoon College. Joined the service of Government in 1888, and passed the Competitive Myookship Examination in 1893. He served for 12 years in the Subordinate Civil Service and 11 years in the Provincial Executive and Judicial Services. He was one of the early Burmese Magistrates to be invested with Special Magisterial powers. In conferring on him the title of K.S.M. in 1909 the Government remarked “Maung Hla Baw is a thoroughly capable, intelligent and upright officer with an excellent record both in the Executive and Judicial Services. He showed great energy and intelligence at a critical time in August, 1905 when the town of Kindat was flooded by an abnormal rise of the Chindwin river, and life and property were in danger.” He was in the Superior Judicial Service for 7 years, and was in charge of the Districts of Bassein, Moulmein, Prome, Thayetmyo, Myaungmya Pyapon Maubin and Henzada. He served as the Divisional and Sessions Judge of the Prome, and Delta Divisions for 2 years and was a permanent Divisional Judge before the District and Sessions Judge’s Scheme was introduced in Burma. In recognition of his consistently good and honest work he was appointed a Companion of the Imperial Service Order (I.S.O.) in 1921. He retired in December 1923. Since his retirement he has been doing public service as President of the Bassein Municipality, as a Visitor of the Bassein Central Jail, as Vice-President of the Child Welfare and Leprosy Relief Fund Committees, and as President of the National High School, and St. John’s Ambulance Associations in Bassein.
